De staarten van pasgeboren biggen worden afgesneden en de slagaders worden onmiddellijk dichtgeschroeid, waardoor het risico op infectie aanzienlijk wordt verminderd. In de regel blijft een staart van 2 tot 3 cm lang over. De verkleining van de staart vermijdt ook het kannibalisme dat wordt veroorzaakt door promiscuïteit op de boerderijen.

Les queues des porcelets nouveaux-nés sont coupées et les artères sont immédiatement cautérisées réduisant ainsi fortement les risques d'infection. En règle générale, on laisse subsister une queue de 2 à 3 cm de long. La réduction de la queue évite également le cannibalisme généré par la promiscuité dans les élevages.

During tail docking the tails of newborn piglets are burnt off and by this the vessels close simultaneously. Pathogens cannot penetrate when the vessels are sealed immediately. Generally tails are docked to a length of 2 – 3 cm. The reason for tail docking is to avoid cannibalism among pigs that might take place if tails remain long during rearing and fattening.
